Cocktail Dress Detail
This
lovely cocktail dress was designed by my client. She wanted something
slinky and sexy for her wedding reception and had seen a photo in a magazine of
a similar design. Her requirements were a lowcut back, spaghetti straps,
fitted style, with sheer fabric peeking out at neckline and hem, and a drape at
the front.
I started by looking through my old patterns and had several sleeveless fitted prom dress type patterns. I made one up in muslin and she came for a fitting. We lowered the back, took in the sides, adjusted the strap placement and the side slit depth.
The dress is made from a medium weight champagne polyester
satin, lined with a lightweight ivory fabric and trimmed with ivory
organza. I washed a piece of the satin to give it a softer hand for the
front drape, which is simply a rectangle of fabric with serged edges, gathered
into what we professionals call "gobs" at the ends and attached just
to the front of the side seams. The dress has a side zipper.
