Green Chase Dress Costume Detail

My client had originally commissioned Eowyn’s Green Gown from another seamstress and when the project was not completed on time, she came to me to see what could be done.  The previous costumer had chosen lightweight suede for the green gown and had gotten as far as assembling the main part of the dress, but it was poorly done.

We decided to use that suede for a green/gold version of Arwen’s Chase Dress instead.  I was able to salvage enough suede for the skirt and parts of the bodice, and luckily found a very close match to the dye lot and purchased another skin to complete the costume.  The dress is lined with a marble patterned green cotton that matches the green suede tone very nicely.  Where the lining shows at the collar simulates the lace pattern.  I did a trial run with a layer of dense zig-zag stitching on water soluble stabilizer, but it looked too “busy” at the neck.

The underskirt is a lighter green drapey crepe and the undersleeves are greenish gold metallic crinkle organza.  My client did the painting on the sleeves herself. They look beautiful!

I successfully made the front closure with a short separating zipper attached to the lining, just off center, and secured the center front with Velcro and a hook/eye closure.  The ribbons through the buckle in front kept everything shut nicely.
