Sam Costume Detail
The
costume as pictured didn’t require too much sewing from scratch. We shopped at
a second hand store and then I got to work with modifications. A man’s dress
shirt got new brown buttons and a reshaped collar (rounded the pointy bits). I
took the collar off an old tan suede dress jacket and used brown bias tape to
finish the raw edges. The pocket flaps were removed, and I used one of them in
the back above the vent, to create more of a frock coat look, with buttons from
the cuffs. I hemmed up some old tan corduroy pants to calf length. I also made a
fake vest, from off-white and tan/brown striped cotton. I made two front pieces
and sewed them into the jacket at the shoulder seams and side seams, put on
buttons and buttonholes and now it looks like he’s got an extra layer! I
followed the instructions (very easy, by the way!) for the fellowship
cloak on ACS using lightweight soft grey jersey material. The fellowship pin
is made from green metallic Sculpey clay and wire,
with
silver painted leaf veins and backing. My model supplied his own Hobbit sword,
frying pan and sausages!
I can make any of these pieces custom as well.
