Eowyn's White Wool Costume Detail
Well, this dress (as pictured)
was finished before we had any really good pictures, so it isn’t all that
accurate, but still lovely and my model loves it. I used Butterick 3552 view B,
with a modified scooped neckline and slightly modified sleeve shape. I made the
dress from a “bridal brocade” polyester, with a subtle geometric design. It
was underlined with flannel for warmth (we did plan, after all, to wear these
costumes for hours in line in December), and lined with a lightweight white
acetate. The sleeves were lined with gold tissue lame and I used an invisible
zipper in back. I made a belt by layering a strip of the dress material over a
strip of flannel, and folding the edges under so they overlapped in back.
Over
all of this, I stitched down a pretty white and gold wire edged ribbon and chose
a geometric stitch to machine stitch down the middle in gold thread.
The belt
attaches in back with snaps and at the front center, I pinned on an old gold
square cross pin that looked vaguely Scandanavian/Viking to me. We tied gold
cord around her upper arms after she put on the dress.
I have since been able to obtain more accurate pictures and descriptions and can make you a version that looks more like the original, including the tightly laced undersleeves and brocade lining (instead of the bright shiny lame!).
